Last Night in Photos

Date published: November 15th, 2008

Here are a few pictures from last night’s awesome Dead Confederate / Apollo Sunshine show at Spaceland. I’m really glad I went. Both bands performed admirably and the crowd was really digging the whole thing, which is nice.

Tonight - Dead Confederate / Apollo Sunshine @ Spaceland

Date published: November 14th, 2008

Hello America. Congratulations again on making me smile.

Tonight at Spaceland is a very American show and I mean that in the nicest way. Dead Confederate, a titular rock group hailing from Athens, GA (home of REM and Of Montreal) will be playing tonight with ambling rockers, Apollo Sunshine. Rolling Stone named Dead Confederate one of six artists to watch and I think the Onion summed them up perfectly when they said “they sound like Bleach-era Nirvana covering My Morning Jacket.” Couldn’t say it better myself. Their new album, Wrecking Ball is out now on Gary Gersh’s TAO label and they recently performed on the Conan O’Brien show.

Return of the Post - Presented by Clogs!

Date published: November 13th, 2008

Sheesh. I’ve been so wrapped up in celebrating the election and Veteran’s Day that I really haven’t given much time to blogging. Well, that’s not entirely true, I’m also a music publicist and I just launched a record label - Chocolate Lab Records - and our debut release is by Andy Yorke of Unbelievable Truth fame! Which is to say, a very cool first release by anyone’s standards. Unbelievable Truth was on Virgin Records in the late ’90s and sold quite a few records. This is Andy’s first solo album and I’m not going to review it here, but I am very excited about it and I’ll post an MP3 below. It comes out on CD Nov 18 and is on sale at Amazon and iTunes now.

The title says this post is presented by Clogs. But only unofficially. Clogs is the classical music-infused avante garde rock band featuring Bryce Dessner and Padma Newsome (The National). They’re not for the faint of heart or for the heart of the Faint, but they’re stunning.

Fallout 3 - Midnight Release

Date published: October 27th, 2008

Why am I doing this???

OK - Fallout 3 comes on October 28th, but Best Buy is doing a midnight release, so I’m going to pick up the game in a couple hours. This is the culmination of 10 years bravely waiting for a sequel to the Fallout series. I played the original two so much on my PC in 1998 that I probably turned transparent from lack of sun exposure. For reals. And now it’s here. Word to the wise - buy this game. It’s a post-apocalyptic fanatic’s dream.

Insane Lakai Skate Video

Date published: October 24th, 2008

Judging from the 500k+ views, I’m sure most people have seen this video, but I just remembered it tonight and wanted to share. It’s so fucking sick. Spike Jonze is the culprit. It gives me goosebumps with every viewing.

Band You Should Know (Biblically?) - Writer

Date published: October 22nd, 2008

I got these email that said really big at the top - WRITER.

I thought they were addressing me. Turns out that they were introducing themselves. The band is called Writer and they’re from San Deigo. They have a new 7-song (EP?) album, Blood Drops, and it’s startlingly good. Reminds me of a lot of things - Guided By Voices, Grandaddy - plenty of others. I think they’re totally worthy of your listen. You can buy the album from their website - www.writertheband.com. The title track, “Blood Drops” is superb. Better try and write something they can put in their press kit…

Writer is the kind of band that sneaks up behind you and follows you to school for six miles through a snow storm, quietly serenading you like like madmen at play. At first you’re afraid to listen, but something grabs you and pries your eyelids open Clockwork Orange style. Your eyes start to burn and everything washes out in a white blur. There’s a silhouette. The guitars swell, the drums reek havoc on your nervous system… drip… drip… tiny red specks appear on your cheek. Blood drops. It’s too late - you’re one of them now. All is well.

or…

I haven’t taken a shine to a band this fast since I first heard the opening notes of Braid’s “Never Will Come For Us”.

Jeff Mangum Plays a Song… LIVE!

Date published: October 20th, 2008

As the Elephant 6 tour wound down in Columbus last night, the recluse himself, Jeff Mangum, played “Engine”. I got this news from Donewaiting.com, so if you saw it elsewhere, please don’t attack me for not crediting the original poster. Cuz I don’t know what they fuck you’re talking about.

Please to enjoy.

All he really ever wanted was to watch this great video my friends Philip and Andy made. They used some Daniel Johnston music too. It’s a class act.
